Abstract

Within the framework of the current global crisis provoked by the COVID-19 pandemic and the hegemonic role of China in the world economy, the revision of China’s socioeconomic and political transformation from imperial Qing dynasty until the present day is paramount. This presentation focuses on a crucial period in the history of China, the so-called “High Qing” (shèng qīng 盛清), to study its interactions with the West, mainly with imperial Spain, from a global and comparative perspective. Concepts such as global history with “Chinese characteristics” and China’s “New Silk Road” policy are analysed in detail. The results of the GECEM Project (Global Encounters between China and Europe www.gecem.eu), funded by the European Research Council (ERC), will be presented. GECEM Project Database (www.gecemdatabase.eu), designed within this research, stands out as cutting-edge Digital Humanities tool applying Big Data analysis to global (economic) history in spaces of China, Europe, and Spanish America.
